Sentient answers your most frequently asked questions all about a business’s Health & Safety.
The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 places a legal duty on employers to ensure the health, safety and wellbeing of employees. Measurers required include adequate training, adequate welfare provisions, a safe working environment and provision of suitable relevant information and supervision.
PPE is used to control exposure, be it to disease, substances or fire. The responsibility of the employer is to offer protective equipment to all employees who require it. A health and safety audit will help businesses identify areas where exposure cannot be adequately controlled, and therefore PPE will be needed. Common areas that require PPE include: hot and cold environments, electricity, large machinery, dust, radiation, lasers, hazardous chemicals, noises, sharp objects. Possible contact with blood, bodily fluids and respiratory secretions also requires PPE.
By law, any person, business or undertaking that employs five or more people must have a written Health & Safety Policy. It should include a statement of aims, to the effect that your business will meet lawful Health & Safety standards. As well as a description of how the business is organised, and who has responsibility for different aspects of Health & Safety. The responsible person needs to be documented and properly trained. Sentient has a wide range of training available for employers wanting to know more about Health & Safety management systems. The Health & Safety Policy should also include a description of the procedures and arrangements to ensure that work is conducted safely.
The employer is most often the person in control of fire safety precautions. This includes fire safety procedure, means of escape, risk assessments and incident reports. According to Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, employers, owners or landlords are responsible for the fire safety of anyone working or living on their premises.

Many of our businesses and employer clients revisit courses annually, frequently using our different services throughout the year. Health & Safety management procedures may only need to be learnt once to be implemented, however courses such as fire safety and asbestos awareness will need to be used as a refresher for managers and as introductory training for new employees. Certification for most courses are valid for 5 years, but this is dependent upon the course. Contact us to see if we can plan out a health and safety training schedule for your business.
